The following list provides some detail regarding scholarships offered at Warawara at Macquarie University. While most scholarships are based on academic merit, many of the following also consider financial disadvantage.

Some Scholarships and Cadetships are not regularly offered. All cadetships, scholarships and employment strategies are reliant on funding availability.

NSW Indigenous History Fellowship 2008 - Deadline Extended!
The deadline for nominations for the NSW Indigenous History Fellowship has been extended to FRIDAY 6 JUNE 2008. Any assistance you can provide in spreading the word would be much appreciated.
Please find the relevant information below:The NSW government, through Arts NSW, is offering the biennial NSW Indigenous History Fellowship in 2008, worth $20,000.
The NSW Indigenous History Fellowship is intended to assist a person living in New South Wales to research and produce a work on a subject of historical interest relating to New South Wales from an Indigenous point of view.
Applicants are required to demonstrate that their project will add to, or
bring fresh perspectives to bear upon, their nominated subject. They should
also demonstrate that the project will benefit their experience and
development as an historian and/or advance scholarly historical writing in
New South Wales.

The National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP)
links full-time students undertaking a diploma, an advanced diploma or their first undergraduate degree with employers who can give them work placements and ongoing employment once they finish their studies.Cadetship employers:
* provide paid work placements of 12 weeks for each year of the cadetship
* support the cadet through their study and work placements, giving professional guidance and mentorship
* employ cadets under an appropriate industrial instrument
* intend offering ongoing employment to the cadet once they successfully complete their cadetship.
The NICP provides up to $15 400 per annum to employers to support cadets with a living allowance and study-related costs and offset employer administration costs.

Freddy Fricke Scholarship
The maximum scholarship per annum will be $10,000. When approved, the funds will be made as a grant to the University, which will be requested to allocate the grant towards the successful applicant's account. Generally, lower maximum limits will apply if the student lives at home.
A NSWALC Freddy Fricke Scholarship normally can cover the following:

Books, stationary and equipment
A contribution towards travel expenses
A living allowance (subject to ABTUDY limitations)
Grants will be made at the discretion of the CAF Community Fund trustee and the university to which the grant is made. Evidence will be required that the applicant has been accepted for the approved course.
Scholarship grants are available for undertaking a degree or diploma at any University or TAFE in NSW, which is approved by the CAF Community Fund trustee. In some instances they can be offered to post graduate students.

Robert Riley Scholarship
The aim of the Robert Riley Scholarship Program is to promote the pursuit of justice and human rights for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through supporting education of young Indigenous people.
Up to four scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 25 years or under for the pursuit of studies in the fields of law, legal practice, human rights, child protection, criminology and criminal or juvenile justice.

Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS)
CECS provide full-time undergraduate students from low socio-economic and/or Indigenous backgrounds with a scholarship of $2,000 per year for up to four years, indexed annually. In 2004, 2,500 CECS were offered. By 2008, over 5,100 new CECS will be awarded each year and over 22,500 students will have received a CECS. The Commonwealth will provide approximately $128 million over five years to the CECS program.
Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS)
These Scholarships will provide full-time undergraduate students from rural and regional areas with $4,000 per year (indexed annually) for up to four years, to assist them with accommodation expenses where they have to move to undertake higher education in the course and at the higher education provider of their choice. In 2004, 3,000 scholarships were offered. By 2008, over 3 570 new scholarships will be awarded each year and over 17,000 students will have received a CAS. The Commonwealth will provide over $199 million over five years to the CAS program.
Reg Saunders Scholarship

The RSL established this tertiary level scholarship for drug and alcohol abuse studies in 1992 for students of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background. The Scholarship provides a $3,000 grant to assist with these studies
In the development of the Scholarship, consultation with ATSIC revealed the urgent need for qualified substance abuse professionals among the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. As such, the Scholarship requires an applicant to major or specialise in drug and alcohol abuse targeted courses. Where these courses do not specifically contain subjects or units dealing with substance abuse, the students must be able to provide scope for such studies in their elective subjects and field placements.
The closing date for applications is 31 October each year for studies commencing the following year.

Education
In order to employ more Aboriginal teachers scholarships are available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people wishing to become primary teachers or secondary teachers of any subject.
Scholarships can be for 1,2,3,4 or 5 years and are available to students who are or will be studying an approved pre-service teacher training course at a NSW or ACT tertiary institution. Eligible students include those undertaking an undergraduate or postgraduate teacher education program.
The scholarships cover the cost of HECS fees for subjects successfully completed while studying for a teacher qualification. A training allowance of $1,500 for each year of the scholarship is also provided to meet the costs of incidentals, textbooks and student administration fees.
On successful completion of studies, scholarship holders will be guaranteed permanent employment in a NSW public school in Sydney's western or south-western suburbs or in a non-coastal rural area of New South Wales.

GARRAWI Indigenous Post Graduate Scholarship
Garrawi is the Darug name for the sulphur-crested cockatoo - common at Macquarie University campus at various times of the year.
The Garrawi Scholarship shall be awarded to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student enrolled or undertaking postgraduate university studies at Macquarie University. The value of the scholarship is $2,500 payable to the recipient in two equal instalments at the beginning of each semester for one year only.

Ken Brindle Memorial Awards
Description
* The awards were established in 1989 in recognition of the outstanding contribution of the late Ken Brindle, a former President of the Aboriginal Education Council (NSW) Inc., to Aboriginal education. Ken had a special interest in increasing opportunities for mature-age Aboriginal students.Ken had a vision of a society in which it was possible for all people, regardless of colour or creed, to live in harmony without poverty or exploitation.

Indigenous Youth leadership Programme - Tertiary Scholarships
The IYLP provides scholarships and leadership opportunities targeting young Indigenous Australians from remote areas, studying at a tertiary level. Applicants from rural and regional areas will also be considered.
Scholarships of up to $6,000 per eligible student, per year, are available for university course fees and other educational requirements.
In addition to the scholarship, various opportunities will be offered to IYLP scholars for the development of leadership skills, personal development, work experience and more! Costs associated with these opportunities will be funded in addition to the scholarship.
Universities and communities are encouraged to identify and assist eligible students to apply for this great opportunity to participate in the IYLP.
